Scope

This folder covers the major instruments and instrument families that matter most across modern music history.

The goal is not organology for its own sake. The goal is to explain how instruments actually function in successful and unsuccessful records.

What Each File Covers

  • the instrument or family in musical terms
  • what it is especially good at expressing
  • how it has been used in major genres
  • what successful use sounds like
  • what failed or weak use sounds like

Core Rule

Instruments do not carry meaning by themselves. Their meaning comes from register, timing, arrangement, performance technique, recording method, and cultural context.

The same instrument can feel intimate, brutal, comic, sacred, fake, or exhausted depending on how it is written, played, and recorded.
