Bass

Role

Bass binds rhythm to harmony. It can stabilize a song, destabilize it, sensualize it, or make the whole track feel dangerous.

Successful uses

  • lines that converse with drums instead of merely shadowing roots
  • register control that opens or tightens the track
  • repetition used to hypnotize, not deaden
  • melodic bass writing that quietly redirects emotion

Failed uses

  • sub-only mud with no articulation
  • overbusy playing that competes with everything
  • bass as an afterthought in arrangements that need weight
  • sterile DI tone with no character where character is needed

Key lesson

Bass succeeds when it changes the body’s relationship to the song.
